and the Tourism Industry: Building Bridges of Understanding
and Insight

The
growing importance of Information and Research (I/R) for
effecting policy formulation, planning, and decision making
continues to put increasing pressure on Destination Management
Organizations (DMOs) to gather, interpret, and utilize this
resource in a cost-effective manner. To achieve this goal,
DMOs must develop their ability to use available I/R more
efficiently. This article argues that current levels of
understanding of the research process and research findings
can be enhanced through “Learning Forums” provided
by local and regional universities. In addition to benefitting
industry, these Learning Forums offer a unique opportunity
for university centres to access valuable research data.
The end result will be strong, ongoing relationships that
greatly enhance mutual understanding and insights into tourism
destination management. Efforts are currently underway to
assist selected members of the International Association
of Convention & Visitor Bureaus (IACVB) to undertake
pilot projects to develop Destination Learning Forums.
