This
paper examines various types of tourist interest in the
circumstances of ethnic and indigenous groups in developed
countries. It considers whether that interest is a ‘special
interest’, or whether it is a particular form of mass
tourism, or whether it is a form of ‘new tourism’.
Using three case studies it explores the evidence of strategies
to achieve diversification, and to sustain tourism interest.
In conclusion there is a speculation that the sustainability
of this form of tourism is linked to the determination of
critical carrying capacity thresholds linked to degrees
of authenticity.
